Introducing the Dark Star foilboard for kiteboarding and wake foiling. I’ve had this in the works for some time and will post more on the design and build process as I get time.
When foiling took off a few years ago I took an old surfboard that I had and added a track box to it so that we could foil behind the boat. This worked but it had some serious downsides. It was too long, which meant it was a pain to store in the boat while we were out but not foiling as well as making it more likely to catch the nose when pumping. It was also much wider than it needed to be and the bottom was flat which didn’t help when positioning your feet for a water start, in fact the board liked to lay flat in the water which makes it really hard for the uninitiated to water start, but it did it’s job and got us out foiling.
I decided I wanted a new board to address the issues so I whipped out Fusion360 and decided this would be a great project to do using T-splines, which is a more intuitive modeling approach that results in really organic lines. The result of this effort is the Dark Star, a 42” x 18” foilboard that comes in at 18 liters.
